Professional Growth and Adaptability

What does your typical day look like, and how do you make it productive?

My day starts early, around 5:45 a.m. I head to the hospital and work on anesthesia until about 3:30 p.m. After that, I run errands until around 5 p.m. Then, I prepare dinner and eat until about 6:30 p.m. Following dinner, I take care of evening farm chores until about 7:30. From 7:30 to 8:00, I do house chores. A relaxing hot tub session follows from 8:00 to 8:30. Finally, I prepare for the next day to ensure efficiency and productivity, ending the day with some TV or sleep by 10 p.m.

How do you stay informed about industry trends and emerging technologies?

I stay updated by reading anesthesia magazines and looking up information online. I also regularly participate in CME’s sponsored by the ASA or travel to attend them.

Can you recall a significant challenge or failure you faced and how you overcame it?

A significant challenge was when another anesthesia group took over my group’s contract. I used that time to transition my work-life balance, stepping down as Chief of Anesthesia after 12 years and working per diem. This change allowed me more manageable hours and time to focus on my lavender farm, which has been a blessing.

Innovation in Agriculture

What is your approach to starting a new project?

I first figure out what the end goal is and then take the necessary steps to make it happen. I employ help and assistance as much as possible to ensure the project’s success.

What was the toughest decision you’ve had to make in recent months?

Stepping down as Chief of Anesthesia was tough, but now I work as a per diem anesthesiologist with more manageable hours dedicated to medicine. This decision has been one of the best I’ve made, and my next step is to move the farm into hosting events.

Tell us about a skill you taught yourself. How did you go about learning it?

I taught myself some anesthesia blocks that I use today. I did this by watching videos and attending CME’s.

Personal Insights and Reflections

What people in your life or career have had the greatest impact on you? How?

Probably my anesthesia attendings from Illinois Masonic Medical Center. Many of the foundations of anesthesia came from them, and I still remember and use the knowledge I gained from them.

What do you think it is that makes you successful?

I’m persistent about my ideas and goals. I don’t stop until I’ve accomplished them. Currently, my attempt to do weddings and events on the farm is my top priority. It’s taken me over four years and many obstacles from the Town of South Kingstown and my immediate neighbors, but I persist.

Cabrera’s dedication to his dual passions of medicine and sustainable farming exemplifies his commitment to making meaningful contributions to his community and industry.

Expertise and Achievements

With your vast experience in anesthesiology, what advancements or innovations have you contributed to in the field?

I have been instrumental in developing the Perioperative Opioid-Saving Program at South County Hospital. This initiative is part of my broader efforts to create a Perioperative Surgical Home. The program focuses on enhancing patient care by minimizing the use of opioids, which is crucial in today’s healthcare environment, given the opioid crisis.

What are some of the most rewarding achievements in your career so far?

One of the most rewarding experiences was being the Chief of Anesthesia and leading my team through various changes and improvements. Additionally, the successful implementation of the opioid-saving program stands out as it has significantly contributed to better patient outcomes.

Can you share more about your venture into agriculture and the achievements with Lavender Waves Farm?

Transforming the farm has been a significant achievement. Since acquiring Lavender Waves Farm, we’ve implemented modern and sustainable farming practices, planted over 4,000 lavender plants, and involved the local community in our endeavors. The farm’s beauty and productivity have been recognized by the community and media alike, which is incredibly fulfilling.

Vision for the Future

What future goals do you have for both your medical career and your agricultural pursuits?

In medicine, I aim to continue refining and promoting the Perioperative Surgical Home concept to enhance patient care. For Lavender Waves Farm, my vision is to expand into hosting events like weddings, which will allow us to share the farm’s unique atmosphere with more people. This goal aligns with my interest in community involvement and sustainable practices.

How do you envision the integration of your medical expertise and agricultural interests moving forward?

Both fields represent my commitment to improving quality of life. I see opportunities to use sustainable farming as a model for wellness and rehabilitation programs, potentially integrating them into therapeutic environments. This synergy could offer holistic benefits to individuals seeking recovery or relaxation.

What advice do you have for aspiring professionals in your fields?

For those entering anesthesiology, I recommend staying current with industry trends and technologies, and for agricultural entrepreneurs, embrace sustainable practices and community engagement. Persistence and adaptability are key in both fields.

Dr. Henry Cabrera continues to inspire through his dual commitment to advancing medical practices and pioneering sustainable agriculture. His work exemplifies the possibilities of integrating diverse expertise to enrich both personal and community life.
