Sweltering Heat and Humidity For The Weekend

Another weekend of oppressive heat and humidity for the island. While it may feel hot here, many of the mainlanders are flocking to the shore to beat the heat where inland temperatures are climbing into the upper 90s with a heat index approaching 110. Along the coast, temperatures will top off around 90 with a heat index of around 100. A large high pressure system parked offshore will continue to pump heat and humidity our way through the weekend. As with any hot, unstable airmass, the threat of t’storms exist but least likely along the coast until a frontal system begins to move into our area on early next week.

Ocean water temperatures have climbed to all-time record levels over the last couple of days. Water temperatures of around 83 degrees earlier this week have now dropped into the low 70s, which still feels great. Southwesterly winds created some upwelling which caused the temperature drop. Always take caution when dipping into the ocean to beat the heat as rip current risk will be higher than it has been recently.
