More women in our community battling cancer will receive the care they need thanks to a donation of more than $50,000 from the Greate Bay Women’s Golf Association (GBWGA) to the Auxiliary of Shore Medical Center. The GBWGA presented the check on Thursday, Oct. 5 at Greate Bay Country Club in Somers Point. Funds were raised through their 4th annual Swing Golf Tournament held Sept. 25. This was the second year in a row the group has partnered with the Auxiliary, the hospital’s original fundraising organization, which raises funds to support Shore Cancer Center.

Sue Webb, Swing Tournament chair, said the group of more than 80 women is thrilled to be able to make such a big difference in the lives of women in need.

“Our desire as a women’s golf association is to help local women who are facing a cancer diagnosis receive quality cancer treatment, despite their financial circumstances. Last year, we were able to help 40 women battling cancer, and we’re thrilled to know that this year we’ll be able to help even more,” Webb said. “Through patient testimonials, we are able to experience how deeply our support matters.”

Joseph Johnston, administrative director of oncology services at Shore Cancer Center, says that donations like this can truly save lives.

“We are deeply appreciative of the Greate Bay Women’s Golf Association for their dedication to helping our patients. Sustained support from an organization like theirs helps ease the financial burden many patients would otherwise experience without their generosity. The prognosis of our patients depends greatly on their emotional health, so anything that can reduce their worries goes a long way in helping them beat the disease.”

The Auxiliary of Shore Medical Center is part of the Shore Medical Center Planned Giving and Development Department and is made up of dedicated volunteers who work throughout the year on initiatives that include the hospital gift shop, thrift shops, golf tournaments and other community events. Since the Auxiliary’s inception in 1940, the Auxiliary has donated more than $12 million to Shore Medical Center.

 ABOUT SHORE CANCER CENTER

Since 1987, Shore Medical Center has received approval from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC), by meeting or exceeding the organization’s stringent standards for patient care. Only one in four community cancer programs nationwide are qualified to earn this level of approval. Approval is granted to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to provide the best in cancer diagnosis and treatment and are able to comply with established CoC standards. Each cancer program must undergo a rigorous evaluation and review of its performance and compliance with the CoC standards every three years. The American Cancer Society recommends receiving care at a CoC-accredited cancer program to ensure you receive high-quality, comprehensive care from teams of specialists who can coordinate the best treatment options available for you.

The Shore Medical Center Radiation Oncology Department is also accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR). ACR Accreditation ensures that Shore’s program meets the most current and stringent standards in staffing, equipment, quality control and technical capability.
