As the world’s markets and technology evolve, so too must its financial institutions. Banco Angolano de Investimentos S.A. (BAI), Angola’s first private bank and the country’s leading money-centre bank, is no different. The pillar of Angola’s financial infrastructure, and leading agent of economic transformation, is investing heavily in digital banking infrastructure by growing its innovation team fivefold to prepare for a new core banking system launching between 2027 and 2029. By preparing for digital transformation, Banco BAI is sowing the seeds for the nation’s digital banking future.
Innovation has historically been a driving force within Banco BAI since 1996, when the bank was founded as the first private commercial bank capitalized exclusively with national funds. In the thirty years since then, Banco BAI has readily tackled digitization, diversification, and technological acceleration to keep up with the demands of its customers, eventually scaling into the full-featured digital-banking platform it is today. Banco BAI has approximately 5 trillion kwanzas in assets, close to 2,000 direct employees, a network of around 1,000 service points, and roughly 3 million clients—about 1 million of which are already digital customers. Now, it’s preparing to expand its offering to new horizons by scaling its innovation capacity.
“Banco BAI has long acted as a leader within the financial sector, innovating and bringing solutions to the market where none previously existed,” says BAI. “The Bank is also recognised as a thought leader on financial sector practices, both domestically and abroad. It stands as a reference in all aspects of banking and risk management, offering its customers tools and services that are widely valued.”
Investing In Innovation
Banco BAI has been an innovator in the region since its founding, and has been a driving force in the digital transformation of the Angolan banking industry. The emphasis on innovation really began between 2010 and 2018, in which they evolved their governance and internal-control frameworks, expanded its training initiatives, and began financing structuring projects in agribusiness, bioenergy, and industry that formed the core of Angola’s productive diversification effort. In this same time, BAI accelerated their digitization efforts—efforts that have continued apace to this day in the form of the BAI Directo ecosystem, which includes an app, a browser, and a free voice-over-phone banking service.
“The Bank has pursued innovation and digital transformation through three principal channels: BAI Directo, its free banking application dedicated to the customer experience; the adoption of Office 365 cloud services to strengthen operational efficiency; and a programme to migrate its core banking platforms, scheduled to begin between 2027-2029,” says Banco BAI. “Together, these initiatives have enabled Banco BAI to sustain its growth and to support an expanding customer base, while continually enhancing the quality and reliability of its services.”
Today, Banco BAI’s ambitions are to serve every Angolan, and that requires investing further in infrastructure and technology. BAI is building the infrastructure and institutional capacity to extend its banking services to the full breadth of the nation’s population, primarily via advanced mobile and digital platforms engineered on deep technical expertise and decades of institutional learning. Through these technologies, BAI hopes to remove the barriers of geography, formality, and cost that have historically limited financial inclusion, while also anticipating future customer needs.
“The most inclusive trend is the need for banking at a low cost and having universal access to payments within all countries,” the company says. “Financing is a critical need as well both for retail and SME and flexible, digital solutions are a key part of our current and future offering.”
To support these efforts, Banco BAI is investing in their internal teams and giving them the resources they need to develop those services. Their main innovation department has grown from a 20 person squad to a full team of over 100 professionals, all aimed toward implementing a new core banking system (and supporting banking apps) that the company plans to launch between 2027 and 2029. The goal is to continue doubling their customer base over the coming decades, which would establish Banco BAI as a premier financial institution in the region.
Building Financial Literacy And Inclusion
Outside of the new system, Banco BAI is also investing in expanded retail networks and is developing content to increase financial literacy across Angola. Indeed, investing in financial literacy projects and initiatives is another priority for BAI, alongside other public relations initiatives, for the simple reason that financial literacy is the foundation upon which families and businesses can grow secure and strong. Long term economic growth requires an understanding of capital budgeting, capitalization, and savings management—things that can be taught and explained in simple terms that have the potential to get families to save regularly and consistently.
“Banks should help families and businesses understand in simple terms how to help with tools and guidance,” the company says. “We provide conferences and discussions on topics from bank statement understanding, to ESG key areas development trends, free for all who want to learn. We do also have a magazine with multimedia features that is currently summarising key trends for our market, free for all.”
These educational efforts are part of BAI’s overarching goal of expanding financial inclusion across the country. Whether it’s through their banking platform, their educational outreach, or their dedication to strong relationships with customers, financial inclusion is central to Banco BAI’s operations. That goal informs the bank’s long-term plans and ambitions, which themselves are made possible by BAI’s unique position in Angola’s economy: a money-centre bank at the intersection of public-sector development objectives and private-sector dynamism. From this position, and with the innovations coming down the pipeline, BAI is positioned to support economic development across Angola, to the benefit of all.
“By expanding its network, Banco BAI can serve a vast and diverse territory, bringing banking closer to communities across the country,” the company says. “This physical presence is reinforced by digital and payments solutions designed to reach the full population—and, in particular, a young and increasingly connected generation—thereby widening access to banking services for those who were previously underserved.”
