The city of Somers Point has been awarded a New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Safe Streets to Transit Program grant for Shore Road pedestrian improvements in the amount of $861,000.
In an effort to present details and solicit feedback on the grant program, the city is hosting a public forum on the project Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. at Somers Point City Hall (located at 1 W. New Jersey Avenue).
It is anticipated that the forum will last about an hour and will provide the public with an opportunity to speak with city and county officials and professionals regarding the proposed project and use of the funds for pedestrian improvements along Shore Road.
“On behalf of Somers Point’s council and administration, we pride ourselves on being responsive to the residents of the city,” Somers Point Mayor Jack Glasser said in a news release. “We are thrilled to have been awarded this Safe Streets to Transit funding in the amount of $861,000 and look forward to presenting our plans for Shore Road to the public. Somers Point is already a highly walkable city, and this project will only improve upon that.”
The NJDOT is committed to principles that promote Safe Streets to Transit, according to the release.
The program utilizes Transportation Trust Fund dollars to improve safety and accessibility for mass transit riders in the vicinity of transit facilities.
These funds serve to advance transportation initiatives without burdening local property taxpayers. The city applied for the NJDOT Safe Streets to Transit funding last year and city officials just recently learned of the award and specific dollar amount.
The objectives of the Safe Streets to Transit program are:
- To improve the overall safety and accessibility for mass transit riders walking to transit facilities.
- To encourage mass transit users to walk to transit stations.
- To facilitate the implementation of projects and activities that will improve safety in the vicinity of transit facilities (approximately one-half mile for pedestrian improvements).
