As the popular song of the season maintains, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas throughout the City of Somers Point.
A visit around town yesterday revealed all kinds of holiday activity.
A Somers Point True Value Hardware, proprietor Paul Giunta told us he had never sold a Christmas tree before Thanksgiving before, but that precedent was shattered this year. Following Thursday’s holiday, business has been brisk at the store with more than a dozen trees sold already.
Meanwhile, City Hall had been gussied up with oversized Christmas wreaths and at historic Bay Avenue nearby, wreaths were hung from light poles and businesses and residences had holiday lights installed.
At the Volunteer Fire Company No. 2, a sign advertising visits by Santa was observed, urging residents to book their appointments early. Hey, that’s good advice: Santa is pretty busy this time of year.
The town will host a Christmas Parade and tree lighting Friday December 2, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The parade, featuring floats and marching groups from town, steps off from Dawes Avenue and will read down Shore Road and end at City Hall. There, Mayor Jack Glasser will light the tree, kids can meet Santa and take home a treat, and the Mainland Tri M Chorale will perform.
The next day, Saturday Dec. 3 will feature a Holiday Kids Day from noon to 2 p.m. at Jordan Road School Children can meet Mrs. Santa Claus, create tree ornaments and hear a reading fo the classic “T’was the Night Before Christmas.”
Later that evening starting at 6 p.m. Christmas Carol Porch Performers will sing at 37 Somers Avenue (at Bay Ave.) and they will stroll the neighborhood visiting homes and local establishments.

On Saturday, businesses were jumping as Somers Point locals and residents of surrounding towns kept the stores busy in the K-Mart Shopping Center and elsewhere along Route 9.
All in all, it made for a festive atmosphere in town as Somers Point showed it takes a back seat to no place when it comes to holiday preparations and cheer. Imagine what it will be like when we get into December!
