Barbara Teresa (Gimbel) Doughten, age 82, of Ocean City, NJ, formerly a long time resident of Philadelphia, PA passed away peacefully at her home in Ocean City surrounded by loved ones on September 19th 2017.
Barbara was born on November 1st 1934, the eldest daughter of William Gimbel and Teresa Ropars Gimbel. Barbara grew up in Philadelphia with her brother Billy and sister Carol, where she attended St Timothy’s, St Mary’s Academy, Misacordia Nursing School and The College of St Francis where she received her Bachelor of Science at the age of 60.
Barbara married the love of her life, William F Doughten in 1959. The couple settled in Philadelphia in the early 1960’s, where they raised their four children; Billy, Terri, Barbara, and Stephen.
Barbara was a dedicated and hard working registered nurse for over 40 years, before retiring to Ocean City where she built her dream house near the bay.
Barbara was a devoted and loving mother and wife. She was very proud of her family and was excited to become a “Mom mom” to her 13 grandchildren and a “Gigi” to her 4 great grandchildren. Barbara loved holidays and family get-togethers; any chance to spend time with her family was important to her. She would spend hours cooking and preparing for her company.
Barbara was known for her feisty, yet good sense of humor. She will be missed by all that knew and loved her.
Barbara was the beloved wife of William F. Doughten, devoted mother to Billy Doughten and his wife Angela, Terri Doughten, Barbara Louviaux & her husband Todd, Stephen Doughten & his wife Cathy, and the late Francis Xaviar Doughten, loving “Mom mom” of Stephanie Powley & her husband Rob, Randy Clegg & his wife Brittany, Brian Copestick & his wife Amanda, Nico Doughten, Rachel Louviaux, Daniel Louviaux, Amanda Doughten, Teresa Doughten, Stephen Doughten, Patrick Doughten, Mark Doughten, Dylan Louviaux, and Beth Lynn Doughten. Barbara was a proud Gigi to Billy Wayne Powley, Rosalie Clegg, Lily Clegg, Cole Copestick, and very excited for Charlie Clegg to be born in December 2017. Barbara was also very special to John V. Doughten III.
Barbara was preceded in death by her mother and father, her son Francis Xavier Doughten, her sister Carol Loder, and her brother William Gimbel Jr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Friday morning at 11 o’clock from St. Augustine’s RC Church of St. Damien Parish, 13th Street at Wesley Avenue, Ocean City, NJ where friends may call from ten o’clock until the time of mass.
A Graveside Service will be offered Saturday morning at 10 o’clock in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheltenham, PA.
