My first independent business was an electronics and watch store in McAllen. It met local demands effectively, and I even adapted to the rise of e-commerce by moving online. Initially, the store performed well on platforms like Amazon. However, as market dynamics shifted, particularly with Amazon’s growing dominance, I faced challenges that led to selling the business. What motivated your shift from e-commerce and real estate to the hospitality industry?
After my e-commerce venture, I entered the real estate market with a 20-acre housing project. Unfortunately, market conditions were not favorable, and I had to exit the industry. This experience taught me valuable lessons about market timing and risk management. In 2000, I ventured into hospitality by opening a 65-room La Quinta Inn & Suites in Pharr, Texas. The hospitality sector appealed to me because it allowed for a more personal connection with clients, which I valued greatly.

In recent years, I’ve partnered with Marriott to open the TownePlace Suites San Antonio Northwest at The RIM, a 109-suite extended-stay hotel. How do you balance being a hands-on manager with empowering your general managers?
While I am very hands-on and visit my properties regularly, I also trust my general managers to run day-to-day operations. My role is to provide guidance and support, ensuring everything aligns with our long-term goals. I believe in empowering my managers to make decisions and foster their leadership skills, but I’m always available when they need assistance.

Family is everything to me. My parents’ journey inspired me, and now my children and grandchildren are my greatest motivators. My success is not just for me but for them as well. Their support has been invaluable, and I aim to create a legacy they can be proud of.
What is your long-term vision for your hospitality business?
My long-term vision is to have at least 1,000 rooms under each brand we work with. I aspire to build a management team capable of handling operations independently, allowing me to step back and enjoy more personal time while ensuring the business continues to thrive and expand.
