Sunil Wadhwani’s journey from an immigrant child in Brownsville, Texas, to a notable hotelier in McAllen and beyond is a testament to resilience, entrepreneurial spirit, and the influence of strong family values. Born in Asia and arriving in the United States at the age of six, Wadhwani’s early years were spent helping his family run a retail/wholesale business in Brownsville. This formative experience imparted crucial lessons in hard work and perseverance, setting the stage for his future ventures.

Today, Wadhwani oversees a thriving hospitality business with properties spread across Texas, including partnerships with major brands like Marriott. In the following interview, Sunil Wadhwani delves into his career path, the challenges he faced, and his vision for the future.

Early Experiences and Career Beginnings

How did your upbringing in Brownsville influence your approach to business?

Growing up in Brownsville was instrumental in shaping my business mindset. My parents, who were my first role models, worked tirelessly with limited resources. I learned the importance of perseverance and entrepreneurship from them. The family business was more than just a store; it was a classroom where I understood customer engagement, inventory management, and the ebb and flow of business cycles.

What was your first entrepreneurial venture, and how did it shape your career?

My first independent business was an electronics and watch store in McAllen. It met local demands effectively, and I even adapted to the rise of e-commerce by moving online. Initially, the store performed well on platforms like Amazon. However, as market dynamics shifted, particularly with Amazon’s growing dominance, I faced challenges that led to selling the business. This decision, while difficult, was a precursor to entering a more sustainable industry—hospitality.

Transition to Hospitality

What motivated your shift from e-commerce and real estate to the hospitality industry?

After my e-commerce venture, I entered the real estate market with a 20-acre housing project. Unfortunately, market conditions were not favorable, and I had to exit the industry. This experience taught me valuable lessons about market timing and risk management. In 2000, I ventured into hospitality by opening a 65-room La Quinta Inn & Suites in Pharr, Texas. The hospitality sector appealed to me because it allowed for a more personal connection with clients, which I valued greatly.

Can you share more about your current projects and any significant partnerships?

In recent years, I’ve partnered with Marriott to open the TownePlace Suites San Antonio Northwest at The RIM, a 109-suite extended-stay hotel. This partnership underscores the industry’s trend towards extended stays, particularly in the post-pandemic landscape. Such projects demonstrate our commitment to meet changing travel patterns and demand for more amenities.

Industry Insights and Challenges

What do you see as the biggest trends shaping the hospitality industry today?

One major trend is the shift towards extended-stay properties. People are traveling differently, with a growing demand for longer stays that offer more amenities. This is one reason I’m excited about our partnership with Marriott. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this trend, changing travel patterns and emphasizing the need for flexibility and enhanced safety protocols.

How did you navigate the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in your business?

COVID-19 was an unprecedented challenge for the hospitality industry. We had to rapidly adapt by enhancing safety protocols and focusing on local clientele due to a decrease in international travel. In South Texas, we had previously relied heavily on cross-border traffic, so this shift required a strategic reallocation of resources and marketing efforts.

Leadership and Legacy

What advice would you give to someone looking to break into the hospitality industry?

My advice is to start by learning from the ground up. Hospitality is a people-centered business, so understanding operational aspects before managing or expanding is crucial. Building strong relationships with your team and maintaining high customer service standards are essential. Always stay adaptable and be prepared to deal with market shifts and economic downturns.

How do you balance being a hands-on manager with empowering your general managers?

While I am very hands-on and visit my properties regularly, I also trust my general managers to run day-to-day operations. My role is to provide guidance and support, ensuring everything aligns with our long-term goals. I believe in empowering my managers to make decisions and foster their leadership skills, but I’m always available when they need assistance.

Personal Life and Future Goals

What role has family played in your entrepreneurial journey?

Family is everything to me. My parents’ journey inspired me, and now my children and grandchildren are my greatest motivators. My success is not just for me but for them as well. Their support has been invaluable, and I aim to create a legacy they can be proud of.

What is your long-term vision for your hospitality business?

My long-term vision is to have at least 1,000 rooms under each brand we work with. I aspire to build a management team capable of handling operations independently, allowing me to step back and enjoy more personal time while ensuring the business continues to thrive and expand.
