The Ocean City Fire Department and Ocean City Police Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 1914 Asbury Avenue at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Black smoke was coming from outside the second floor of a residence. Police found a deceased male outside the building on the second-floor landing of an exterior stairway, according to a city news release.

The fire was extinguished quickly.

There were no other occupants of the building at the time and no injury to any first responder. The structure suffered minimal exterior damage, the release stated.

Caution tape is strung around the second-floor landing where the victim was located.

Ocean City Public Information Officer Doug Bergen did not have any further details to release as of Wednesday afternoon.

He said in an email, “We’ll be able to release an identity and more detail on the incident as the investigation continues.”

Investigators are still working to identify the victim and notify next of kin.

The incident remains under investigation by the Ocean City Police Department, Ocean City Fire Department, Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, and Cape May County Fire Marshal.
