The Stockton Maple Project’s 2024 Inaugural Tapping Day has been postponed to Thursday, Jan. 18, due to the stormy winter weather.

Several professors and staff involved with the project will now be tapping trees at the university’s maple grove from 2 to 3 p.m. on Thursday. The grove is located just off Vera King Farris Drive and opposite parking Lot 1 at the university’s Galloway campus.

A tapping demo will take place along with a syrup and sap tasting and a tour of the maple grove. After the event, the project will host an adopt-a-tree event from 3 to 5 p.m. where members of the community can come to campus to tap their adopted trees. New participants are welcome to come and adopt a tree for free.

Stockton has been awarded two U.S. Department of Agriculture grants totaling more than $900,000 to promote maple sugaring in the South Jersey region through research and community outreach.

The university has also begun selling some of its syrup at local farmers markets.
