During Dr Lorenzo Suter’s homelessness, nobody, not even himself, could’ve predicted the fulfilling career and life he’d lead as a senior executive in various major healthcare companies. His professional track record is a testament to the power of selflessness, and after leaving his CEO and regional president position at UnityPoint Health, he plans to bring his 20 years in management experience to a new notable health system.

In each professional position Lorenzo Suter has undertaken, he’s demonstrated his undeniable talent for effective turnarounds, visionary thinking, redesigning systems, team culture change, and organizational transformation.

Dr. Lorenzo Suter’s career is dotted with the steady progression that many people aim for, showcasing increased responsibilities as he toiled to the top. He’s worked in all manner of healthcare establishments — large-scale, small-scale, not-for-profit, for-profit, urban, and rural — and brought exceptional contributions to every organization’s performance and growth.

While there are numerous ways Lorenzo Suter has made a difference, the most notable include:

  • Turning three underperforming hospitals around through EBITDA improvement, recruitment, inventory control, service line expansion, and cost reduction.
  • Enhancing and restoring a hospital’s reputation and generating $6 million in revenue by earning the “preferred provider” accolade for a major university in the vicinity.
  • Developing accountability, trust, and open communication among employees, leading to a worker engagement score improvement (78.1% to 87.5%) and a physician engagement score improvement (41% to 84%). In this case, he earned the highest leadership effectiveness score amongst all participants in a large health system.

His advanced education from the Western Kentucky University has certainly helped him achieve these enhancements for his previous organizations. However, it’s his life skills, depth of experience, ability to motivate, objectivity, interpersonal skills, and emotional intelligence that have skyrocketed him to the dizzying heights of success.

Experience Puts Dr. Lorenzo Suter a Cut Above the Candidate Crowd

His glowing career card began in December 2003 in Nashville, Tennessee, where he became a senior executive administrator at Healthcare Management Systems, with operational responsibilities encompassing a plethora of included groups (e.g., Sunlink Group, Schuster Group, Attentus Healthcare Group, etc.).

Responsible for telecommunications, networking, IBM mainframe, outsource hosting, database admin, and oracle financial applications, he offered direction for help desk operations and system conversions until he left in October 2005.

From there, he joined Summit Hospital in Phoenix City, Arizona, as the chief operating officer/assistant administrator. Here, he managed operational services for the hospital, such as marketing, volunteer, and inpatient programs. Alongside that, he managed materials, plant operations, IT, medical staff services, laboratory, and other departments, where his profound employee engagement, policy, business development, management, and planning skills ensured he experienced many successes.

Dr. Lorenzo Suter Dr. Lorenzo Suter left Summit Hospital in August 2007 and joined Southeast Alabama Med Center in Dotan, Alabama. In his administrator role he provided strategic direction, leadership, and support for home health services, special therapy, peri-operative services, and many more.

But some of his proudest achievements occurred from July 2012 to March 2015, during his time as the vice president of operations at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, Illinois. He served on the senior hospital administrative team, offering strategic leadership for a host of services. The site boasted 12 OR suites and 10,000 procedures every year, and he personally managed 500 employees within a wide practice scope.

From developing a new relationship with emergency medical ambulance companies to establishing a structural heart program to decreasing Medicare percentage of excess days by 25% to exceeding business development targets, Dr. Lorenzo Suter’s talent as a turnaround specialist served him and the hospital incredibly well.

Most recently, he worked as the regional president and chief executive officer at UnityPoint Health in the Sioux City Region, driving improvements in clinical outcomes, expansion, and financial performance. Providing strategic direction and oversight to the comprehensive acute and other care services, he made changes to the Medical Executive Committee, leading to reductions in MRSA BSI (67%), C-Diff Infection (50%), and reportable HAPI (95%).

Plus, Suter opened a pediatric clinic, led the implementation of lean initiative to reduce OR turnover times, helped develop COVID vaccination clinics, and even improved 13 of 14 Quality and Patient Experience Metrics.
