Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner submitted his resignation Tuesday to Gov. Phil Murphy and Interim State Attorney General Andrew Bruck, according to a news release from the Prosecutor’s Office.

No reason was given for the resignation, but Tyner’s tenure has been plagued by alleged ethics violations.

The governor appointed Tyner as the Atlantic County Prosecutor on March 15, 2017. His term was not due to expire until March 2022.

At the Atlantic County Courthouse in Mays Landing on Tuesday afternoon, Judge Bernard Delury, Jr. swore in First Assistant Prosecutor Cary Shill as Acting Atlantic County Prosecutor.

Shill began his career in 1989 with the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office. In 2006, he was promoted to Chief Assistant Prosecutor.

During his tenure with the office, Shill has supervised the Trial Unit, Atlantic County Shooting Response Team, Gangs, Guns and Narcotics Unit, Violent Crime Unit and Computer Crimes Unit.
