Atlantic Cape Community College’s tutoring program received an extra boost thanks to a few local businesses. Senior accountants and partners from Ford-Scott & Associates LLC of Ocean City and the company bookkeeper from Manco & Manco Pizza have volunteered to tutor Atlantic Cape baseball players and other students in accounting.
“While we have a tremendous and very successful tutoring program, we are immensely grateful for Ford-Scott’s willingness to help our students,” said Michael Sargente, tutoring coordinator for Atlantic Cape.
Atlantic Cape’s Buccaneer baseball program puts great emphasis on its student-athletes pursuing academic excellence. Last year, the team’s average GPA was over 3.0.
“We are here to help get these young men to the next level academically and athletically,” said Rod Velardi, head baseball coach at Atlantic Cape. “Academics come first. We set high goals for our student athletes, but we also give them the tools and resources they need to achieve those goals. Having Ford-Scott tutor our players is a great arrow to have in that quiver.”
Atlantic Cape’s tutoring program is free and open to all students, not just athletes. In addition to the tutoring service, Atlantic Cape also offers free access to NetTutor and a paper review service.
Details about these programs, which are now all online, can be found by visiting www.atlantic.edu/tutor.
“These professionals taking time out of their busy schedules to tutor and mentor our collegiate student-athletes embodies the values, such as selflessness and community service, we promote at Atlantic Cape,” said Atlantic Cape’s new Athletic Director Jamal Edwards.
“We were happy to get involved,” said John Sabella, partner at Ford-Scott. “Giving back to our community is part of our culture here at the firm. What could be better than helping our own community college?”
