The Atlantic County Office of Disability Services joins in celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Signed into law on July 26, 1990, the ADA was modeled after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as an “equal opportunity” law for people with disabilities.
The ADA protects those with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, have a history or record of such an impairment, or who are perceived by others as having such an impairment.
“Our emphasis in Atlantic County has always been on ability – rather than disability. Everyone has something to contribute and our job is to help ensure access and opportunity,” stated County Executive Dennis Levinson.
The Atlantic County Office of Disability Services with support from volunteer members of the Atlantic County Disability Advisory Board advocates on behalf of county residents with disabilities. Together they provide technical advice and consultation regarding laws, regulations and issues that impact our communities.
They have been instrumental in promoting awareness of beach accessibility and handicapped parking, personal assistance services for eligible individuals and providing transportation resources.
For the past 31 years, Atlantic County has recognized the outstanding contributions of individuals with disabilities at its annual Donald J. Sykes Award Ceremony each October.
