Somers Point has been awarded a $130,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) to expand its bike path, according to a city press release.
The expansion will include construction of bike lanes on Somers Point-Mays Landing Road, which will be used to connect the existing bike path and the Route 52 multi-use path to the new Garden State Parkway multi-use path and bike lanes on Route 9.
“We are excited to now have the funding to connect the bikeways to the parkway, Ocean City and our neighboring communities,” said Greg Sykora, Somers Point Economic Development Advisory Commission (EDAC) chairman. “Somers Point is the biking hub for the shore.”
The length of the project is three-quarters of a mile and will include delineation of a bike lane on the roadway and pedestrian improvements to the sidewalk on the north side of the road.
The bike lanes will provide a connection between Route 9 and the new Garden State Parkway Pedestrian/Bicycle Bridge that will provide access to Cape May County and the Somers Point – Pleasantville Bike Path and NJ Route 52 Causeway to the east that provides bike access to Ocean City.
Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2020, with completion in summer 2020.
