Pomona, N.J. – More than 200 Stockton University students participated in the 8th annual HERO Games here Thursday to promote designated driving and the John R. Elliott HERO Campaign.
Students representing campus fraternities and sororities competed in flag football, egg tossing and a tug of war as part of the HERO promotion and Greek Week festivities. Close to 1,000 students also signed HERO pledges not to drink and drive, and to always use designated drivers, according to Joe Thompson, Stockton’s assistant director of student development.
Since 2010, Stockton has been the headquarters for the HERO Campaign, which promotes designated driving and responsibility in memory of Navy Ensign John Elliott of Egg Harbor Township, who was killed by a drunk driver in July, 2000, two months after graduating from the United States Naval Academy. The organization is now active in seven states, partnering with schools and colleges, highway safety agencies, bar and tavern owners and professional sports teams.
This summer, the HERO Campaign will host the first HEROtini Mocktail Challenge, a competition between bartenders at more than 30 bars and restaurants at the Jersey Shore. The public will vote online for their favorite non-alcoholic drink, drink name, bartender and establishment. Winners will be selected from ten finalists at the final HEROtini Happening celebration to be held at Stockton Seaview Resort on September 14.
